With the "art/science festival", the Centre for Aesthetics usually organises an event on the border between art and science every two years: Artists and researchers from various subject areas address a common theme over several days. In sensory and generally understandable contributions, they convey their specific perspectives on an overarching phenomenon, which is thus illuminated in an interdisciplinary way and becomes perceptible in overarching contexts.
Previous festival themes have included "White Noise", "Voids", "Complexity", "Elegance" and "Paradox".
In the 2017/2018 winter semester, the art/science festival took place for the first time in cooperation with various universities and cultural institutions in OWL. The theme at the time was "Identity" (in German).
From 2020 to 2022, individual events centred on "Censorship" (in German) and self-censorship, ranging from the distinction between freedom of expression and personal and human rights to digital censorship and upload filters to specific questions about censorship and self-censorship in the arts and sciences.
"Bad taste" (in German), kitsch and the like were "debated" at all levels and in all areas in autumn 2022.
In the winter semester 2024/2025, the art/science festival "Irritation" explored the relationship between art and politics from a wide variety of angles: Exhibitions, lectures, comedy and discussion rounds invited visitors to be irritated in one way or another and to enter into dialogue.
